Special Issue Invitation: Soft Rock Engineering Challenges and Innovations

Introduction: Soft rock, with its intricate mechanical behavior, poses significant challenges in rock engineering, particularly as projects in coal mining, water conservancy, and transportation extend into deeper territories. The encounter with weak and fractured strata in complex geological settings, characterized by high in-situ stress, geothermal gradients, and the presence of groundwater, necessitates innovative approaches to ensure safety and manage construction costs effectively. The comprehensive understanding of soft rock's physical properties, classification, and the development of novel design methods for engineering in such environments is crucial for the advancement of the field.

The International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM) Soft Rocks Commission is proud to announce the organization of the ISRM Workshop on Soft Rocks, to be held in Porto, Portugal, in May 2025. This workshop will be accompanied by a special issue dedicated to exploring the frontiers of soft rock engineering. Additionally, the issue will delve into the intriguing topic of future mining technology on the Moon, examining the mechanical properties of lunar soil and rock, as well as drilling technologies suitable for extraterrestrial applications.


简介:在煤炭开采、水利和交通等众多领域的岩石工程中,不可避免穿越软弱破碎地层,特别是向地球深部进军时,软弱岩层处于高地应力、高地温和强富水等复杂地质环境。在复杂环境的耦合作用下其力学行为复杂、破坏机理不明,给软岩工程带来巨大安全风险和高昂的建造成本。理解复杂地质环境中软岩物理力学性质、分类及创新性的工程设计方法对该领域的发展至关重要。为此,国际岩石力学与岩石工程学会(ISRM)软岩委员会将于2025年5月在葡萄牙波尔图举办ISRM软岩专题研讨会。该研讨会将附带一期探讨软岩工程前沿的特刊。此外,本期特刊还将深入开展月球未来采矿技术话题探讨,包括月球土壤及岩石力学特性,以及适合外星应用的钻探技术。



Call for Papers

征稿方向

We warmly invite scholars and practitioners to contribute original research papers that address the following themes within soft rock engineering:

  • Physical properties and mechanical behavior of soft rock in complex geological environments.

  • Theoretical frameworks, technologies, and methodologies for on-site testing and monitoring in soft rock engineering.

  • Analysis of disaster modes and mechanisms associated with soft rock engineering.

  • Innovations in theory, technology, methodology, and materials for managing large deformations in soft rock tunnels.

  • Safety theories and technologies specific to soft rock tunnel engineering.

  • Prospects for the future of lunar soil and rock collection technologies and their theoretical underpinnings.
